In Physis, Meirav Heiman and Ayelet Carmi create a world filled with vitality and beauty, as nature and mythological hybrids coalesce in a realm suffused with poetry and resonant with anxiety.
Two artist-scientists set out to study nature. Their appearance and body language are cotemporary, yet in Heiman and Carmi’s typical fashion, their actions blur the line between actual and imagined, past and future, reality and dream.
The researchers affix paper cutouts to their bodies and hair. The painted and cutout artificial vegetation is fragile and seductive, and resembles a type of parasite overtaking its surroundings, while existence itself is presented as an act of survival. The women themselves are transformed into “natural objects,” overturning the relations between body and gaze, object and consciousness, while assimilating into the display at the Museum of Natural History. The work is suffused with desire and poetry, while offering two types of gazes at “nature,” as represented in two poems by Robert Frost and Joyce Kilmer. The poems are recited in the mesmerizing voice of the artist Etty BenZaken, in a synergetic musical collaboration with the Modalius Ensemble and the composer Yuval Shay-El.
This work partakes of a new cluster of video works created by Heiman and Carmi, which each relates to female experience involving fiction and the imaginal, as revealed by a contemporary gaze. Physis is dedicated to the artist Maria Sibylla Merian, a pioneering scientist, entomologist, and illustrator active in the 17th century, as well as to the Israeli artists Ruth Koppel and Bracha Avigad, both illustrators of natural and botanical imagery.
With movement combining a sense of destiny and an inevitable end, daydreaming and freezing, Physis resonates with local memory and touches upon the desire for the possibility of another kind of life, upon the complexity of the schism, and upon the pain of leave-taking.

פיזיס, מירב הימן ואילת כרמי
מירב הימן ואילת כרמי בוראות ביצירה פיזיס עולם רוחש חיים, רענן ורב יופי של טבע והכלאות מיתולוגיות, עולם רווי בפיוט ומהדהד חרדה.
שתי מדעניות־אמניות יוצאות לחקור את הטבע, דמותן ושפת גופן עכשוויות, אך כדרכן של הימן וכרמי, המעשה מתקיים בגבול שבין האמיתי למדומיין, בין עבר לעתיד, ההיית או חלמנו חלום. החוקרות מחברות מגזרות נייר לגופן ולשערן.
הצמחייה המלאכותית שבירה ומפתה, מצוירת וגזורה, נדמית לסוג של טפיל משתלט, והקיום מצטייר כפעולה של שרידה. הן הופכות ל"אובייקט טבע" בעצמן, מהפכות יחסים של מבט וגוף, אובייקט ותודעה, ומתמזגות בתצוגה של מוזיאון הטבע. העבודה רוויה בתשוקה ובפיוט, מציעה שני מבטים על ה"טבע" שמתגלמים בפואמות מאת רוברט פרוסט וג'ויס קילמר, בקולה השואב של האמנית אתי בן זקן, ובשיתוף פעולה מוזיקלי־סינרגטי עם אנסמבל מודאליוס והמלחין יובל שי אל.
העבודה שייכת למקבץ עבודות וידאו שיצרו הימן וכרמי. כל אחת מהעבודות מתקשרת להתנסות נשית המשלבת פיקציה ובדיה ונחשפת במבט עכשווי. פיזיס מוקדשת לאמנית מריה סיבילה מריאן, מדענית, אנטומולוגית ומאיירת שפעלה במאה ה־17 והקדימה את זמנה, וכן לאמניות המקומיות רות קופל וברכה אביגד, מאיירות הטבע והבוטניקה.
בתנועה המשלבת תחושת יעוד וסוף בלתי נמנע, חלימה בהקיץ וקפיאה, פיזיס מהדהדת זיכרון מקומי ונוגעת בתשוקה לאפשרות של חיים אחרים, במורכבות הקרע, ובכאב הפרידה.

فيزيس، ميراف هيمان وإيلات كارمي
في عملهما فيزيس تقوم الفنانتان ميراف هيمان وإيلات كارمي بخلق عالم مفعم بالحياة، مليء بالانتعاش وجمال الطبيعة والمخلوقات الهجينة الأسطورية، عالم مشبع بالشاعرية والتوتر.
عالمتان-فنانتان تخرجان لاستكشاف الطبيعة، صورتهما ولغة جسدهما معاصرة لكن بأسلوبهن المعهود، والاحداث تدور في الحدود بين الحقيقي الخيالي، بين الماضي والمستقبل، هل حدثَ حقاً أو حلِمنا حُلما. يحمل جسدهما وشعرهما قصاصات ورقية الصقتها الفنانتان الباحثتان.
النباتات الاصطناعية هشة ومغرية، مرسومة ومقصوصة، تبدو وكأنها طفيليات مسيطرة، الوجود يبدو كفعلٍ لصراع البقاء. تُصبح الفنانتان "عنصراً من الطبيعة"، تعكسا العلاقات بين النظرة والجسد، الغرض والإدراك، وتندمجان في معرض في متحف الطبيعة. العمل مشبع بالعاطفة والشاعرية، يقترح نظرتين على "الطبيعة" تتجسدان في قصائد روبرت فروست وجويس كيلمر، بصوت الفنانة إيتي بن زاكين الشجي، وتعاون موسيقي-تآزري مع فرقة موداليوس والملحن يوفال شاي إل.
هذا العمل هو واحد من مجموعة أعمال فيديو ابتكرتها هيمان وكارمي. كل عمل منها يرتبط بتجربة أنثوية تجمع بين الخيال والتلفيق بنظرة معاصرة. العمل فيزيس مكرّس للفنانة ماريا سيبيلا ماريان، عالمة، خبيرة حشرات ورسامة عملت في القرن الـ17 وكانت سابقة لعصرها، وأيضا مكرّس للفنانتين المحليتين روت كوبل وبراخا أفيجاد، رسامتين ترسمان الطبيعة وعالم النبات.
بحركة تجمع بين إحساس بالمصير والنهاية الحتمية، أحلام اليقظة والجُمود، يُردد العمل فيزيس صدى ذاكرة محلية ويلامس الرغبة في إمكانية حياة أخرى، بتعقيد الانفصال، وألم الفراق.
